For his work in television, Ty earned six Los Angeles Emmys, the National Edward R. Murrow Award, nine Golden Mikes, and the Associated Press Award for California. Ty honed his storytelling craft working closely for years with Mike Wallace and Ed Bradley at CBS News/60 Minutes. Now, a Los Angeles-based documentary filmmaker, Ty’s latest work is a series of short films about a renowned cello teacher and Holocaust survivor named Lev Aronson whose students include Lynn Harrell, Ralph Kirshbaum, John Sharp, Christopher Adkins, Brian Thornton, and many others. Ty’s recent work, “A Cellist’s Life”, reveals the story of Maestro Harrell and his 60-year journey through music, and features interviews with Oscar-winning composers John Williams and André Previn, virtuoso violinists Itzhak Perlman and Anne-Sophie Mutter, the celebrated cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and others.
Ty serves as Emeritus Board Chair and Chief Operating Officer for The Aronson Cello Festival (ACF) which honors the life, teachings and philosophy of Maestro Aronson, the former principal cellist of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. Maestro Aronson taught a generation of gifted musicians who went on to solo careers and to become principal players in some of the world's greatest orchestras. Ty met the illustrator Joy Jamerson through this non-profit work and this special collaboration resulted in their plan to create a series of books reflecting on the power of music to transform lives. Ty runs a private consulting practice that specializes in branding, entrepreneurial marketing, and media consulting. Ty earned his undergraduate degree at Stanford University and his MBA at Harvard Business School. Ty lives in Los Angeles with his wife and two children who play the double bass and the cello. |
About the Illustrator
Joy, a native Texan, has been creating light-hearted, bold, quirky designs since she was young, selling her first painting to her piano teacher when she was in elementary school.
After completing several art courses in college and graduating with a philosophy degree, she was hired as a financial analyst and enjoyed many successful years in the corporate world. As a creative outlet, she continued to expand her portfolio while raising her daughter. Later, Joy worked for a non-profit, held several volunteer positions, designed sets for middle school plays, dabbled in her own card company, and had the privilege of mentoring 7th and 8th grade girls as a houseparent at an international boarding school in St. Louis, Missouri. Illustrating The Silver Cello has been a new adventure in creativity for Joy and she is currently working on illustrations for her next book, a continuing collaboration with author Ty Kim. She lives in Dallas, Texas with her husband Jim, and her Shih Tzu puppy dog, Charley. |
